File and Product Icons

Syntalume ships both a file icon theme and a product icon theme.

File Icons#

File icons cover common frontend, backend, infrastructure, data, and configuration files, including TypeScript, React, Rust, Go, Python, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, Prisma, GraphQL, Svelte, Vue, Astro, Vite, Next.js, Tailwind, GitHub Actions, and common package manager files.

The 0.6.0 set nearly doubles coverage — close to 400 icon definitions across 227 file extensions, 312 file names, 69 language ids, and 122 folder names — and the highest-traffic types (Docker, Python, React, Kubernetes, Helm, git, SQL, Rust, secrets, shell, images, Terraform) carry hand-drawn pictorial glyphs instead of letter chips. New coverage includes jest, vitest, playwright, cypress, storybook, babel, angular, nuxt, .NET, devcontainers, openapi/swagger, bicep, CDK, firebase, cloudflare, expo, bun, deno, vault, nomad, consul, packer, dbt, argo, flux, bazel, grafana, prometheus, .tfstate, .d.ts, and *.test.*/*.spec.*/*.stories.* files.

The expanded 0.2.12 set added stronger coverage for:

  • Cloud and infra: AWS, Azure, GCP, Serverless, SAM, Pulumi, Helm, Kustomize, Skaffold, Terraform, Terragrunt, and .terraform.lock.hcl.
  • CI/CD: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Azure Pipelines, Cloud Build, Jenkins, CircleCI-style config, Makefile, Taskfile, and justfile.
  • Language ecosystems: Cargo, Go modules, Python project files, TypeScript/JavaScript config, package workspaces, and monorepo manifests.
  • Security and ownership: SECURITY.md, CODEOWNERS, Snyk, Trivy, Semgrep, Rego policy, key/cert files, and common secrets files.
  • Project structure: cloud, clusters, charts, environments, overlays, services, packages, migrations, database, policies, security, and secrets folders.

Product Icons#

Product icons restyle VS Code's built-in UI glyphs such as Explorer, Search, Source Control, Run, Testing, Chat, Notebooks, Extensions, Problems, Ports, folding controls, breakpoints, and diff actions. Syntalume uses a bespoke single-color glyph font generated from original Syntalume SVG geometry, shipped WOFF-first with TTF fallback.

As of 0.6.0 the font covers 583 workbench icon ids with 111 bespoke glyphs, including distinct window minimize/maximize/restore controls and a unique glyph for every common IntelliSense symbol kind (class, method, variable, field, property, enum, interface, constant, keyword, snippet, struct, event), so completion lists keep carrying meaning.

Sync#

Run:

Syntalume: Sync Icons With Active Theme

This keeps Syntalume file icons and product icons paired with the active Syntalume color theme. The command is also useful after switching from another theme. Sync, the direct Enable File/Product Icons commands, and Switch Theme Variant apply their related settings atomically. Repeated theme switches retain the original pre-Syntalume baseline. If these commands and Icon Studio are interleaved, General Reset unwinds them in their actual application order; a later manual icon or theme choice still wins.

Personalize with Icon Studio#

Run Syntalume: Open Icon Studio to search the shipped inventory, apply one of the real Balanced, Minimal, Outline, or Pictorial Explorer themes, add safe associations, and import or export a portable preset. Desktop Studio applies exact saturation/opacity and file, folder, root-folder, and language maps by regenerating only its contributed extension-owned theme. Web hosts keep those custom controls as honest read-only preset previews and use the finite shipped themes.
